Welcome to the
Australian Embassy in Warsaw
♦ VALE Professor George Zubrzycki ♦
We, members of the Australian Embassy in Poland, have been all deeply saddened by the news that eminent sociologist and demographer, Professor Jerzy (George) Zubrzycki, AO, CBE passed away on 19 May 2009. Australia has lost one of its great academics and citizens.
Professor Zubrzycki lived in Australia since 1956 and has been considered the “father” of Australian multicultural policy. He established and headed the Department of Sociology at the Australian National University in Canberra from 1970-86. His achievements in the research of Polish immigration in Australia and Great Britain made him the most significant authority in this field in Australia and one of the leading authorities in the world. In 1980-1986 Prof. Zubrzycki was a member of the Board of the Australian Institute of Multicultural Affairs – the key Australian Federal Government advisory body focusing on the development of structural and organisational fundamentals of Australian multicultural policy that led to the establishment of ethnic radio and television as well as a network of facilities providing services to new immigrants. He also chaired the Australian Ethnic Affairs Council. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of multiculturalism, Prof. Zubrzycki was awarded the highest Australian award, the Order of Australia. He was also awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan in 1998.
We wish to express our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Professor Zubrzycki’s Family, wife Alexandra and children, John, Anna, Joanna and Thomas
Ruth Pearce
Ambassador of Australia
